So, do your cats go crazy over catnip? Or, are they kind of take it or leave it cats? Or, do they just thumb their noses at it?

My one cat, Blaze, falls into the first category. She loves everything about catnip. She likes to sniff it (and probably inhales it, too), eat it, rolls around it in, and lay in it. She just acts like she's in cat heaven.

My other cat, Purr, falls into the second category. She'll sniff the catnip a little, nibble it a bit, and maybe roll around it. But, it just doesn't seem like she gets a lot out it.

Both of the cats like to hang out in the sunroom. So, sometimes I get a few pinches of catsnip, and just spread it around on the carpet, so they can have a little "party". They seem to like it when it happens. Any tracking is usually contained to the sunroom, so when the "party" is over, I just vacuum what's leftover up.

My cat Blaze has discovered another substance that has the same effect as catnip - Clinique bar soap. Today I was cleaning out from under my bathroom sink, and I put the various products on the bed, which included several trial size bars of Clinique soap. Blaze was on the bed, and she came over to check things out. When she came to the bars of soap, she sniffed them, rubbed them, writhed around on top of them, and then laid down with one bar between her paws. It was hilarous!

She is. Very Happy

She also likes getting bathed! Maybe it's the smell of the soap she likes! Wink

My other cat, Purr, has a thing for Estee Lauder skin care products, in particular the advanced night repair lotion and the idealist lotion. Whenever I put those products on my face, with no makeup, she'll try to sniff my face and lick them off! It can be quite annoying when I'm trying to go to sleep!

We have a catnip-like herb here in Japan called "matatabi" and you can buy it in powdered form and sprinkle it on the cats' toys. My kitties go mad for the stuff! It really peps them up. When I was going through a stressful period about 7 years ago, & relied on Valerian root to get to sleep, I put the bottle next to my cat to see his reaction and he went ape over it, the same effect as catnip!!! (It has the same smell as socks that haven't been washed for 2 weeks and some cats like that.)

Regarding the toiletry-loving cat issue- a lot of those products contain natural fragrances which come from animals like the musk deer, etc, which means they are packed with phermones, explaining the cats' "Ooh baby, ooh baby!" reaction. My cats always try to lick off my perfume, which contains the same substances!

I just found an article in the Japanese newspaper which said "matatabi" in English is "silvervine". Never heard of it, but apparently some sake brewer is making a liquor with it and ithey claim the silvervine helps to ease muscular pain, provide nourishment, boost sexual drive and also act as a diuretic. Sales of that liquor are booming now, apparently!
